Services decoded: what a shop may list and how schedules treat it

One row per service a shop may put on a list: what it is, how the example schedules treat it, and what to ask. Wear items are not on any schedule; they are judged by measurement.

A shop's list can mix three kinds of item. Some are in your maker's schedule and due. Some are in the schedule but not yet due, or offered earlier than it says. Some are not in any schedule: wear items such as brake pads, which are judged by measurement, and extra services, which are judged by what the shop saw. Discussing recommendations explains the check. This table shows how a few named schedules treat each item, so you know what to look for in yours.

The example schedules are the Toyota 2025 Camry warranty and maintenance guide, the Hyundai 2025 Sonata normal schedule, Honda Canada's Maintenance Minder schedule, and Tesla's maintenance page. They are examples, not your car's schedule. Product-specific

ServiceWhat it isHow the example schedules treat itWhat to ask
Engine oil and filterDrains the engine oil and replaces it and the oil filter.Toyota 2025 Camry: every 10,000 miles or 12 months, 5,000 miles or six months under its special conditions. Hyundai 2025 Sonata: 8,000 miles or 12 months. Honda's Minder decides, with a change at least once a year (Toyota 2025 Camry guide, Hyundai 2025 Sonata schedule, Honda Canada Minder schedule).Which oil specification will you use, and does it match my manual? What does my monitor or schedule say is due?
Tire rotationMoves the tires between positions so they wear evenly.Hyundai 2025 Sonata: every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Tesla: every 6,250 miles. NHTSA says some vehicles should not be rotated (Hyundai 2025 Sonata schedule, Tesla maintenance page, NHTSA).What pattern does my manual give? Will you write each tire's tread depth before and after?
Wheel alignmentAdjusts the angles of the wheels to the maker's specifications. Not a fixed item in the schedules recorded here; NHTSA ties alignment to a car that veers on a straight road. Judged by measurement. What did the alignment check measure, against what specification? Will I get the before and after printout?
Brake padsReplaces the friction pads that press on the rotors. Not on a schedule; judged by measurement. Chevrolet sets no mileage interval because wear depends on driving (Chevrolet brake page). What is the pad thickness in millimeters, on each axle, and what is the maker's minimum? (Art's Automotive suggests asking for both.)
Brake rotors (resurface or replace)Machines the discs the pads press on, or replaces them. Not on a schedule; judged by measurement and condition. What did you measure (thickness, runout), against what limit? Why resurface rather than replace, or the reverse?
Brake fluid exchangeReplaces the brake fluid, which absorbs moisture over time.Honda: every 3 years. Hyundai 2025 Sonata: 48,000 miles or 48 months. Tesla: test every 4 years, replace as needed. Toyota 2025 Camry: inspect only (Honda Canada Minder schedule, Hyundai 2025 Sonata schedule, Tesla maintenance page, Toyota 2025 Camry guide). When was it last changed? Is it due by my schedule, or did a test show a reason?
Coolant exchangeDrains and replaces the engine coolant.Toyota 2025 Camry: first at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months. Hyundai 2025 Sonata: first at 120,000 miles or 120 months (Toyota 2025 Camry guide, Hyundai 2025 Sonata schedule). Is it due by my schedule's first-change mileage? Which coolant type will you use?
Transmission fluidReplaces some or all of the automatic transmission's fluid.Toyota 2025 Camry: inspect only. Hyundai 2026 Tucson: no check under normal use, and darker fluid is not a reason to replace it. Honda: a Minder code, sooner with towing. Car Care Council (an aftermarket trade group): every 24,000 to 36,000 miles (Toyota 2025 Camry guide, Hyundai 2026 Tucson manual, Honda Canada Minder schedule, Car Care Council).Does my schedule list it, at what interval, for my driving? Is this a drain-and-fill or a machine exchange, and does my maker allow that?
Power steering fluidReplaces the fluid in a hydraulic power steering system. Many newer cars use electric power steering (Toyota's lights page lists an EPS light, Toyota). Not among the items we recorded from the example schedules. Search your own schedule for it.Does this car have hydraulic power steering at all? Where does my schedule list the fluid?
Fuel injection or induction cleaningRuns a cleaner through the fuel system or intake.Consumer Reports in 2013 said a fuel service is not needed on a car running fine when the maker's schedule does not call for it; NBC Los Angeles reported in 2008 that Honda does not recommend fuel injection cleaning (Consumer Reports, 2013, NBC Los Angeles, 2008).What did you see that calls for it? Is it in my maker's schedule?
Engine flushRuns a solvent through the engine before an oil change.NBC Los Angeles reported in 2008 that Honda, Nissan, GM and Ford recommended against engine flushes. Hyundai's 2025 Sonata schedule says never to add additives to the engine oil (NBC Los Angeles, 2008, Hyundai 2025 Sonata schedule). Is it in my maker's schedule? Does my maker's manual say anything about additives or flushes?
Throttle body cleaningCleans deposits from the throttle body in the air intake. Not among the items we recorded from the example schedules. Search your own schedule for it.What symptom or measurement calls for it? Is it in my schedule?
Engine air filterReplaces the filter on the engine's air intake.Toyota 2025 Camry: replace at 30,000 miles, inspect every 5,000 on dusty roads. fueleconomy.gov: a new filter does not improve mileage on fuel-injected cars, though it can help acceleration (Toyota 2025 Camry guide, fueleconomy.gov).May I see the old filter? Is it due by my schedule?
Cabin air filterReplaces the filter for the air inside the car.Toyota 2025 Camry: every 10,000 miles. Tesla: every 2 or 3 years by model (Toyota 2025 Camry guide, Tesla maintenance page).May I see it? When was it last changed?
Spark plugsReplaces the ignition spark plugs.Toyota 2025 Camry: 120,000 miles. Hyundai 2025 Sonata: 96,000 or 48,000 miles by engine. Not on an electric car (Toyota 2025 Camry guide, Hyundai 2025 Sonata schedule, Tesla maintenance page). Is it due by my schedule's mileage for my engine?
Timing beltReplaces a toothed belt that times the engine, on engines that have one; many engines use a chain instead.Honda Canada lists it for V6 models only, sooner in extreme temperatures (Honda Canada Minder schedule). We found no US manual among our sources with a timing belt mileage.Does my engine have a belt or a chain? What interval does my manual give?
Serpentine (drive) beltReplaces the belt that drives the alternator and other accessories.Usually an inspection item; judged by condition. What did you see (cracks, glazing, noise)? Is it in my schedule as an inspection or a replacement?
12-volt battery test and replacementTests the battery and charging system; replaces the battery if it fails.AAA Oregon/Idaho: most batteries last three to five years, and heat is the leading cause of failure. Car Care Council: test every fall (AAA Oregon/Idaho, Car Care Council). What did the test show (the printout), and was the charging system tested too?
Wiper bladesReplaces the rubber blades.Toyota 2025 Camry: inspect every 5,000 miles. Car Care Council: change about every six months (Toyota 2025 Camry guide, Car Care Council).Do they streak or skip? (You can see this yourself.)
Electric and hybrid checksChecks that apply to high-voltage cars, such as brake cleaning and the battery cooling filter.Tesla: brake cleaning and lubrication every year or 12,500 miles on salted roads; no annual service required. Toyota 2025 Camry Hybrid: inspect and clean the hybrid battery cooling intake filter, and inverter coolant first at 150,000 miles (Tesla maintenance page, Toyota 2025 Camry guide). Is this item in my maker's schedule for this car, or a general package? Is the technician trained for high voltage?

California's Bureau of Automotive Repair studied fluid flushes through 150 undercover visits, as MOTOR, 2013 reported in 2013: half the shops sold one or more flushes, and BAR also said some flushes are an accepted remedy or preventive maintenance. A service outside the schedule is a question to ask, not a verdict on the shop. Ask the authority

Limits

This table does not say whether any service is needed on your car. Your maker's schedule says what is due by time and miles; a measurement or a diagnosed problem can justify an item outside it. Write each item and your answer to the questions on the recommendations sheet.
