Estimates

Each written estimate, line by line or one line per job: the part type, parts, labor hours and rate, fees, tax and total, the repair warranty, and what you authorized and how.

For a first pass, this sheet is optional: use it when you have a written estimate to check or two to compare. The estimate check does the arithmetic for one.

Estimates

One row per estimate, or per line when you compare two shops on the same work. A blank amount means the estimate did not give it; 0 means no charge. Compare rows only when the work, the part type and the warranty match.

How to use this sheet

  • One row per estimate, or per line when you compare. Two shops' quotes on the same work go on two rows with the same Work text.
  • Compare like with like. The same work, the same part type and the same warranty on parts and labor (comparing two estimates). A cheaper row with a used part and no warranty is a different offer.
  • Blank means not given; 0 means no charge. A total with a blank part in it is marked incomplete.
  • Authorized and how. Write the amount you approved and how: "text, 3:10 pm Tuesday, to the service writer".
Fictional example

The example rows are two fictional written quotes for Priya Raman's two front tires at 4/32 in.: Shop A at $268 with mounting and balancing, and Shop B at $260 with road hazard coverage included. The work text matches, so the rows can be compared; the warranty column shows the difference that the totals hide.

Limits

The sheet compares what two shops wrote. It does not say whether a price is fair or whether either repair is needed, and a charge's legality depends on your state (state examples).
